WASHINGTON, March 12, 2008 /PRNewswire-USNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) received the 2008 Outstanding Leadership Award of the American Psychological Association Practice Organization (APAPO) for her advocacy work and legislative accomplishments on mental health issues. This annual award is given to a member of Congress who has prominently championed the goals of professional psychology.

"Congresswoman Schakowsky has been a tireless crusader of mental health rights and a strong supporter of mental health legislation," says Marilyn Richmond, JD, assistant executive director of government relations for the American Psychological Association Practice Directorate. "The APA is delighted to present this award to someone who has spearheaded efforts on the issue of Medicare reimbursements and been a friend to the profession of psychology."

Congresswoman Schakowsky has been an advocate for fair insurance compensation for practicing psychologists, fighting for the restoration of Medicare reimbursements cut from outpatient mental health services in 2007. Congresswoman Schakowsky is also a vocal supporter of mental health parity legislation now being debated in the House, which seeks equal coverage from insurance companies for mental and physical health conditions.

The Congresswoman serves as the chief deputy whip of the House of Representatives, a member of the Steering and Policy Committee, and the Energy and Commerce Committee. Congresswoman Schakowsky continues to demonstrate her commitment to health care reform with her work in the health subcommittee in the House.

The American Psychological Association Practice Organization is an affiliate of the American Psychological Association, the largest scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States. APA's membership includes more than 148,000 researchers, educators, clinicians, consultants and students.
